ABOUT
Perth Dermatology Research Collaborative
Dermatology research in Western Australia currently has not reached the full potential. A lot more can be done to improve the output of research originating from Western Australia in the field of Dermatology. Innovative ideas to improve lab based, translational and clinical research, and improvements in dermatology patient care need to be encouraged.
One problem is that there is no coordinated approach and the researchers have no forum to interact. Some of us have been involved in Pharmaceutical Company driven research, but more can be done on innovative original research. WA deserves to be well represented in dermatology research on par with other states of Australia, and internationally. Furthermore as WA is geographically the closest to the fast developing countries in Asia, we are well suited to engage in the Dermatology Meetings and Forums in those countries as well.
We are making an effort to develop a database of like-minded WA researchers who will be happy to do dermatology research. We hope this effort will bear fruit in the next 3 years, and continue beyond that as well.
We are grateful to the WA Dermatology Faculty of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and Prof Peter Leedman, Director of Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research for encouraging this effort. We look forward to everyone’s support for this initiative.
The target groups who are encouraged to be involved in this effort are:
-
Dermatologists
-
Dermatology registrars
-
Basic science researchers at Universities
-
Young doctors who wish to do dermatology projects
-
Dermatopathologists and trainees
-
Biomedical engineers
-
Medical students
-
Oncologists
-
Immunologists
-
Infectious Diseases Physicians
-
Rheumatologists
The outcomes expected:
-
More published papers in reputed dermatology and other medical journals by WA dermatology researchers in the coming years
-
More presentations of original work at National and International Conferences by WA dermatology researchers
-
Greater involvement with the Australian Society for Dermatology Research
-
Greater international collaborations
-
Greater enjoyment of doing dermatology, beyond the clinical and service aspects
-
Patents on new devices or techniques
-
Innovative ideas in dermatology research and patient care coming to fruition
The inaugural meeting of the Perth Dermatology Research Collaborative (PDRC) was held at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, in Seminar Room G 24 at QE II Medical Centre, 6 Verdun Street, Nedlands 6009, between 10am – 12:30pm on Saturday 25 May 2019. It was a thought provoking meeting with several interesting speakers.
We hope this website will provide a platform to join and interact with lab based researchers, medical students, young doctors and dermatologists as well as numerous groups in the allied fields such as biomedical engineering.
PDRC website will have a list of scientists and clinicians with their special interests allowing members to easily link up with the other members in those sub specialities. This list will be available only to the members. Researchers can join the PDRC by applying through this website: www.perthdermresearch.com/new-members
We hope to have a list of current clinical trials recruiting patients for various studies as well as projects available for medical students and young clinicians on our website to facilitate research.
Perth Dermatological Research Collaborative hopes to work very closely with the WA Faculty of the Australian College of Dermatologists, Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and the major Universities in Western Australia.
